Emily’s Full-Circle Journey: Career Advancement through Inclusive Employment

After graduating high school, Emily pursued studies at the College of the North Atlantic, completing a program in Office Administration, Records, and Information Management. She gained practical experience through a work term at the Autism Society of Newfoundland and Labrador, where she supported office operations, website ideas, and administrative tasks.

Like many new graduates, Emily faced challenges finding steady employment. She joined a job readiness program through the Autism Society and, with support from her parents, was later introduced to Avalon Employment. Through Avalon, she became connected to Ready, Willing and Able (RWA) and was one of the early participants in RWA’s Individual Professional Development Plan (IPDP) initiative.

Her first opportunity came at Provident10, where she worked as a Facilities Office Administrator. There, she participated in the IPDP initiative where she signed up for additional training, which helped her build professional skills, set clear goals, and gain confidence in her abilities. The IPDP became a steppingstone, giving Emily a strong foundation to continue advancing in her career.

Emily went on to build her experience through roles at Eclipse during the holiday season and at Heritage NL, where she supported archiving projects by organizing and describing historical photos. Each position expanded her skills and prepared her for the next stage of her career.

In 2024, Emily came full circle when she applied for a position at Avalon Employment, the very organization that had supported her from the beginning. Very soon after applying for the position, she was hired as a Front Desk Receptionist and Payroll Clerk. Today, she manages timesheets, supports payroll preparation, and provides front-line reception services.

Reflecting on her journey, Emily says one of the biggest positives has been “gaining valuable experience in the workforce and developing a wide range of skills.” She adds that being able to work at Avalon, the organization that first helped her find employment, feels like a true full-circle moment.

When asked what advice she would give to others, Emily shared: “Stay positive and keep building on your skills. Every bit of experience matters and helps you grow. The right opportunity will come when you are ready for it.”

Emily’s journey is a testament to how persistence, structured support through RWA’s IPDP, and inclusive employers such as Avalon Employment can open doors to meaningful and sustainable careers. Her story is a reminder of the impact that inclusive employment can have, not just in creating jobs but also in building futures.
